DMV champion, rapper Wale, made history this weekend with a pop-up concert to celebrate the release of his first no. 1 Billboard Top 200 EP, “The Album About Nothing.” The Seinfeld-inspired album is Wale’s fourth studio album, and dropped Tuesday March, 31st amid industry staples like Ludacris. However, #TAAN was a true standout, and fans showed up to drive that point home.
Thousands of the city’s biggest Wale supporters showed up to the Auto Zone parking lot behind Smith Commons Public House to enjoy the free performance. All ages, genders and ethnicities were represented– vividly illustrating the diverse, and loyal following of the 30-year-old rapper. With the help of his Slutty Boyz family, rappers Phil Adé and Fat Trel, producer Tone P and his A-1 since day 1, Tre of UCB, Wale was able to take us on a musical journey spanning his 9-year career. (Have you heard the go-go song “Sexy Lady?” That’s Tre.)
He kicked off the show with MMG Under God, Slight Work, Pretty Girls and then brought out his posse for Bait, Lotus Flower Bomb, Ambition, Bad, The Body and Clappers. He ended the 2-hour long show with No Hands! Needless to say #TheConcertAboutNothing was LIT! At one point during the performance Shoe City, a regional sneaker chain, brought out a bag of Reebok Question Mids and adidas Mutumbo sneakers. With a black Sharpie, Wale signed each shoe and threw them individually into the crowd. &pizza also gave away free pizzas, while the Slutty Boyz threw a stack of $1 bills into the crowd. The Concert About Nothing was truly a celebration, not only for Wale’s accomplishment, but what he represents for the dreamers of D.C.

WALE x WPGC 95.5fm Interview
w/ DJ Flexx
Over the weekend, Wale did a surprise pop-up show on H Street for 3,500 lucky fans in D.C. The secret show was promoted via Wale’s Twitter and a random link that made fans RSVP. Chosen fans were given an email the next day with all location details. “It was a monumental moment,” he said about shutting down the street. “It seems like a lot of my detractors get quiet when I do stuff like that. They go into hiding and wait until something bad happens… but for me it’s [a] very vindictive feeling to do that.”

The Album About Nothing features a slew of hard-hitting songs that spotlight many different aspects in culture at the moment. One of those songs is called “White Shoes,” which Wale admits is his ode to the overly vain population. “We care more about how we look than what we’re doing.”
But, he takes a new approach to vanity. “It ain’t about what you’re doing, but how we look. It’s just part of our life. There are Section 8 people and free lunch people and we’re always the one’s getting J’s. Money [may be] that bad, but we still find a way to get Jordans.”
